That the law and order situation in Tripura has gone to the dogs a long time ago is well known but the surfeit of criminals including thieves have now started stealing foot items of school children, a sizable section of whom come to the school for the midday meals served in the schools . Such a bizarre theft occurred last night in the Suryamoni Nagar higher secondary school under Amtoli police station beside the national highway. Sources said the school with student strength of more than two thousand comprising both the primary and secondary sections has been recently upgraded to a ‘Vidyajyoti English Medium School’. The primary section of the school where students from distant places come for study is very well run because of the sincerity and hard work of headmaster Tapan Debnath.

But the mishap happened last night as a large quantity of midday meal materials including rice, pulses , soyabean, eggs , salt and a number of packets of edible oil and all utensils were stolen away last night by a gang of thieves including locals. The materials had come by a truck yesterday and were kept in the store room and midday meal room and library of both the sections of the school. Sources from Suryamoni Nagar said that a gang of thieves had scaled the wall of the school and broke into the libraries, midday meal room and store rooms and got away with 15 sackfuls of rice, 8 sackfuls of pulses, 12 packed bottles of edible oil , large quantities of soyabean , a large number of eggs and large quantity of salt and spices besides, buckets, bowels and other utensils.

In the morning one substaff of the school reached the school and found the doors open and, realizing what had happened , informed the head master who rushed in time as did many guardians with their wards. Having seen the vandalized rooms and the theft of such costly materials the head master got in touch with the school inspector and announced dissolution of the school after recording attendance for today. The teachers and guardians of the school felt that had the mobile force of Amtoli police station been on patrol the massive theft could have been avoided. The school authority is now planning to appoint two security guards for the night in consultation with higher authority in the education department.
