Tripura police describe by-polls in two Agartala constituencies as by and large peaceful barring stray incidents of intimidation

In a belated reaction conveyed through a formal statement issued by AIG (L/O) the Tripura police have described the by-elections to four assembly constituencies including two at Agartala as by and large peaceful ‘barring some instances of reported intimidation to the voters at a few places under the 6-Agartala and 8-Town Bardowali constituencies and a stabbing incident’. While extending their heartiest thanks to the electorate the statement said that the polling percentage was also quite high. It also gave polling percentages of the four constituencies with statistical data : 6-Agartala-77.35%, 8-Town Bardowali-71.13%, 46-Surma-83.11% and 57-Juaraj Nagar-83.12%.

The statement said that altogether 16 persons had been arrested at Agartala under preventive sections for involvement in electoral offences. No complaint has however been lodged with the police by any presiding officer or returning officer so far, said the statement. It referred to ‘a few instances of atrocities by political rowdies upon aged persons including media people have been noticed in social media but no complaint has been received in this regard for specific investigation’. “No report of violence or intimidation has been received after the election so far. Police patrolling and mobiles are continuing for maintenance of peace and tranquility in the state.

Regarding the stabbing incident of a police officer the statement said that on the morning of June 23 at around 9-00 AM under the NCC police station one voter named Samir Saha , son of late Santi Ranjan Saha of Kunjaban colony, was stopped on the old Matrimangal road by four miscreants while heading for the polling station to cast his vote. Having failed to stop him from going to the polling station by threat one miscreant stabbed him on the left side of the abdomen and on right elbow. The injured man is a police person on leave and stern action will be taken against the miscreants after identification under appropriate sections of criminal law, the statement added.
