Tripura police claim the by-election was free and peaceful except for a few sporadic incidents

Tripura police in a press statement issued yesterday claim the by-election was free and peaceful except for a few sporadic incidents and extends its heartiest thanks to the electorate of 04 Assembly By-Election Constituencies namely 6-Agartala, 8-Town Baradowali, 46-Surma (SC) and 57 Jubarajnagar which have gone for by-election on June 23 for assisting police in maintaining law and order.

As per the police statement, barring some instances of reported intimidation to the voters at a few places under 6-Agartala and B-Town Baradowali constituencies and a stabbing incident etc. voting was peaceful. Long queues were noticed in all the 221 polling stations where election took place and the casting of vote was also quite high. As per the official figure of the ECI, percentage of votes polled under 6-Agartala AC is 77.35%, 8-Town Baradowali AC is 71.13%, 46-Surma (SC) AC is 83.11% and 57-Jubarajnagar AC is 83.12%.

Police statement also claim, in one incident under NCC PS, in the morning of June 23 at around 09:00 AM one voter namely Samir Saha S/O Lt. Santi Rn. Saha of Kunjaban Colony was stopped by 04 miscreants at Old Matrimangal road, Kunjaban colony while he was going from his house to exercise his franchise and one of the miscreant inflicted injuries on him by a paper cutter in failure to prevent him by threatening. He sustained injuries on his abdomen and right hand elbow and presently undergoing treatment at AGMC & GBP hospital Trauma centre. He is a police person who was on leave. A specific case has been registered and stern action will be taken against the miscreants after identification.

Police said, total 16 persons have been arrested at Agartala under preventive sections for involvement in attempted electoral offences. However, police statement said, no complaint has been lodged by any Presiding Officer or Returning Officer so far. A few instances of atrocities by political rowdies upon aged persons including media people have been noticed in social media. But no complaint has been received by police in this regard from anyone for taking specific investigation. No report of violence or intimidation has been received after the election so far. Police patrolling and mobiles are continuing for maintenance of peace and tranquility in the State.
