The normally inert Tripura police seem to have finally waked up to the reality of situation under pressure from the election commission. In an unusual incident today notorious mafia element of Belonia Kala Manik whose loyalty is with the ruling party was caught in a hide-out at Agartala by police personnel acting on a tip-off and then sent out of the poll-bound two constituencies of Agartala as per regulations announced by the chief electoral officer Kiran Gitte. Kala Manik whose actual name is Manik Das had reportedly come here to help rig tomorrow’s election to 8-Town Bardowali and 6-Agartala constituencies of Agartala.

However, a group of bike-borne hoodlums of ruling BJP had gone to a residential premise in Paul Para area under Town Bardowali constituency and warned the inmates against coming out tomorrow to vote. What the affected family did for redress and whether police intervened in the matter is still not known. But in yet another significant incident today around 2-30 in the afternoon the CPI (M) supporters in Jubaraj Nagar constituency caught hold of two bike-borne BJP miscreants who had arrived there to intimidate voters . As the miscreants were about to be beaten police arrived on the spot and the CPI (M) supporters handed over the duo to police.

Meanwhile, former PCC president and MLA Sudip Roybarman who is also a Congress candidate for 6-Agartala assembly constituency has alleged in a letter to the CEO Kiran Gitte that despite police operations the ruling BJP has sheltered a large number of mafia elements in 36 government run guest houses and private households for rigging the election tomorrow to 6-Agartala and 8-Town Bardowali assembly constituencies. Among the twenty guest houses, hotels and private houses named by Roybarman the most prominent is Bhagat Singh Yuba Awasan in Gorkha Basti, Biponi Bitan market in Durga Chaumuhuni, different marriage halls and private houses including one opposite to ‘Dainik Sambad’ office in Natun Nagar, Centre Point guest house, Gita Bhawan in Sankar Chaumuhuni, Sipard in Kemper bazar area and many other places. Roybarman has urged upon the CEO to take steps to rid all 36 places of mafia elements and rigging squads by directing security forces to swing into action.
