In a new twist to the pre-election realignment in state politics in the state, the PCC president Birajit Sinha asserted that the demand for ‘Greater Tipraland’ raised by ‘Tipra Motha’ party is very much within the parameters of the constitution . Possibly intending to pave the way for an electoral alliance with the ‘Tipra Motha’ in the next assembly election Birajit said that Article 3 of the Indian constitution has laid down detailed procedure for constituting new states, increase or diminish the size of existing states, change the boundary of existing states etc. “Since this procedure is there in the constitution itself how can there be objection to the raising of the demand by a party in the state? One may not agree to such demand but there is no reasonable ground to term it as unconstitiutional as many new states have been formed in India after the constitution came into force” said Birajit .

He however refused to comment when asked whether he was indirectly batting for an electoral alliance with the ‘Tipra Motha’.

However, on whether the Congress will give a written assurance on supporting the ‘Greater Tipraland’ demand , Birajit said that giving such written assurance will depend on the approval of the Congress high command. “If the party high command and our all India leadership feel that such demand may be acceded to they may direct us to give a written assurance , I have just stated the constitutional position and our stand on the issue” said Birajit. However, he conceded that the matter was yet to be discussed in the PCC or at the level of AICC. “The party high command will take a call on the issue as and when the next assembly election nears” said Birajit.
