Agartala March 26,2020 : Tripura police, at the receiving end of biting criticism over high-handedness shown yesterday in dealing with people, today tried to make amends by a good gesture as part of which batches of policemen posted across Agartala town reasoned with people on the advisability of staying indoors with soft words and agreeable behaviour. Besides, the police force also as a gesture of goodwill distributed masks among poorer section of people including labourers, vendors and other impoverished sections roaming the streets. Seniormost IPS officer and acting DGP Rajiv Singh took the lead in persuading his force to conduct themselves appropriately as per law and asked them strictly not to harass people. This paid off good results as nobody complained of any harassment by police today.

Yesterday police personnel, presumably ignorant of the code of conduct during lockdown and exemptions granted to people belonging to different professions, misbehaved with people . In one instance in Ranir Bazar police personnel beat up two persons at Ranir Bazar for drawing money from the ATM without any provocation . A number of people in Agartala town were harassed because they were visible on streets , though in connection with work to purchase essential things. A number of newspaper hawkers, vegetable vendors and fish vendors who are above the lockdown restriction were also harassed and in certain cases beaten up by police.

Reacting to the criticism leveled by many people including the electronics media the acting DGP Rajiv Singh today got down to the streets himself and instructed his juniors on how to conduct themselves . He himself supervised policing all over the town and in outlying areas . Singh also arranged for free distribution of masks among needy people as a friendly gesture which has been appreciated by all sections of people in and around Agartala and also in all parts of the state.
