In a departure from the past the Tripura left front today has demanded notification of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birth day on 23rd January as 'Deshprem Diwas' in honour of the invaluable contribution made by Netaji to the cause of India's freedom from imperialist British rule. This demand has been raised in a letter to the prime minister Narendra Modi . The letter has also demanded appropriate measures to ensure proper observance of Netaji's birth anniversary in all government offices. The signatories to the letter sent to the prime minister are Bijan Dhar, convenor of the Tripura left front committee, Ranjit Majumder, state secretary of CPI, Shyamal Roy, state secretary of all India Forward Block, Gautam Das, state secretary of CPI (M) and Sudarshan Bhattacharjee, state secretary of RSP.
In reference to the background of their demand, the signatories to the letter way back in 1996 the then prime minister (P.V.Narasimharao) had announced that the birth day of Netaji would be thenceforth observed as 'Deshprem Diwas' on the occasion of Netaji's birth centenary celebration then . But over the past twenty five years nothing has been done by any government over the issue. "His immortal slogan 'Unity, Faith and Sacrifice' is more relevant today than it ever was earlier" said the signatories , adding that at present it is imperative that sense of patriotism is inculcated in the minds of the youth by projecting Netaji as a 'role model' and 'true patriot'. The demand for official declaration of 23rd January as 'Deshprem Diwas' was reiterated at the end of the letter addressed to the prime minister by the signatories on behalf of Tripura Left Front Committee.
