Traditional 'Makar Sankranti Mela' organized at Tirthamukh, CM takes bath, VVIPs present

Despite the raging Covid infections across the state the traditional two-day  'Makar Sankranti Mela' is being organized at Tirthamukh in Amarpur subdivision , source of the river Gomati. Thousands of people including many tribals from Chittagong hill-tracts of Bangladesh had come to the opening function of the fair yesterday when the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb took a holy dip in the lake.

The fair was formally inaugurated by the minister for tribal welfare Mebar Kumar Jamatya at 4-00 PM yesterday in presence of BJP MP (East Tripura) Rebati Tripura, the principal secretary of the tribal welfare department Puneet Agarwal and DM (Gomati) Ravel Hemendra Kumar. The chief minister and agriculture minister, scheduled to attend the opening ceremony, were not present. Interestingly, in his speech Puneet Agartala alerted people on the threat of Covid , advising them to wear masks and maintain social distancing but many in the crowd in front of him were huddled together without wearing any mask. The chairman of the fair committee Asim Kumar Tripura presided over the inaugural programme . Many departments of the state government opened stalls in the fair while there are many hotels and restaurants that continue to attract people. Around 12-00 security personnel have been deployed in the fair with CC TV cameras keeping watch all around. This morning thousands of people took holy dips in the river . The fair is scheduled to close today after night.

Meanwhile, reports from Khowai said that many people are observing 'Makar Sankranti' with fervour and enthusiasm . But the joyous festivity has been marred to some extent by high rise in the prices of all essential commodities including meat, fish spices and edible oil. But nevertheless people are making merry of the 'Makar Sankranti' day , throwing to the wind all caution against Covid infection.
