Agartala January 29, 2020: Tripura government has adopted a new tourism policy with special emphasis on religious tourism, tea tourism and eco-tourism. The new policy was passed by the state cabinet yesterday. Briefing media-persons on the new policy the minister for education and law Ratan Lal Nath said that tourism is the priority sector for the state government as revenue multiplier. "The tourism development corporation had been launched in 2008 while a separate department for tourism was launched in 2013 but there has been no progress in tourism; we are trying to reverse the trend and ensure growth of the sector", said Nath.

He said that increasing tourist flow would introduce the rich cultural heritage of the state to the world outside and it would be beneficial for the state in multiple sectors like trade and commerce. The new tourism policy will ensure well-co-ordinated development of the tourism sector to attract domestic as well as foreign tourists. Nath also asserted that after the new government came to power in March 2018 there has been a growth in the tourism sector in Tripura.

Giving statistical data Nath said that in the year 2017-2018 altogether 4,83,488 tourists had come to Tripura but the footfall grew in the year 2018-2019 with 5,29,879 having visited the state. In the year 2019-2020 altogether 3, 97,202 tourists visited the state upto the end of November and the final figure is sure to cross the previous year's number of tourists after the end of financial year on March 31. There has been an increase in the number of foreign tourists also. "Bangladesh being the closest neighbour most of the foreign tourists to Tripura come from that country but European countries and USA also contribute to the tourist inflow; we are trying to ensure faster growth of the tourist flow into Tripura", said Nath.
