Agartala, Dec 15: Agartala Cycloholics, a cycling club today organised the "Jwala Disha ride". This ride is in the memory of the gruesome incident of rape that happened in year 2012, and to sensitize people towards the issue. In 2018 the ride was organised in 22 cities. This year it is organised in 222 cities simultaneously all over India, Agartala being one among them. Agartala Cycloholics organised it in Agartala under the aegis of "Jwala - the voice of the women", an Indore based NGO, active for the women's cause. Crime against women is a social issue; it has many more dimensions than just lack of "stricter Punishments". Recently a police officer rightly said, "till we keep garlanding those who are perpetrator, the situation won't improve".

This is the hard reality of our country. The problems are all around us. Awareness of the people in each and every section of the society is the only solution. This Disha ride is an effort towards that. It intends to make people aware of the crime against women and empower women.

Today the members of the cycloholics group gathered near Rabindra satabarshiki Bhavan. They were with placards carrying messages for social awareness. The ride began from Rabindra bhavan and moved around the city through Fire Brigade, Battala, Paradise Chowmuhani, Post Office Chowmuhani, Kaman Chowmuhani, Old Motostand Stand, Math Chowmuhani to MBB College.

The ride ended in Rabindra bhavan. According to the participants this "Jwala Disha ride" is a step towards encouraging more women to come out of the shadow of social shame and claim what is rightfully theirs. At the same time it is to remind the society around them that "Women are not objects", they too need freedom of choice and liberty of expression as their fundamental right. They hoped that their efforts will make people aware and next year more and more people will join this ride. They are determined to take this cause forward and bring more women participation to cycling in Agartala.
