Agartala, Oct 17: An emergency meeting of the executive committee of the Assembly of Journalists today expressed deep concern over the continuing attacks on journalists and the media. Journalists from a local web portal have been attacked by ruling party miscreants while covering a political clash in the Hapania area. He was physically abused and an attempt was made to snatch his mobile phone. The Assembly of Journalists strongly condemned the incident and demanded swift action against the culprits.
The Assembly of Journalists thinks that the way in which the Chief Minister has publicly threatened the media and journalists on September 11 is encouraging the miscreants of the ruling party, and journalists are being attacked in some parts of the state almost every day.
Surprisingly, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has been playing a silent role in these incidents, which are believed to have the support of the rolling party in the face of increasing attacks on journalists indirectly. This is because no action has been taken by the police so far despite the filing of specific FIRs and deputations to the DGP in this regard.
Today's meeting reviewed the historic public outcry that took place on October 15 in protest of the Chief Minister's threat to the media. Today's meeting marks the success of all the programs of the Assembly of Journalists so far.
It was decided at the meeting that the movement of journalists across the state would intensify unless the Chief Minister withdraws the threat to the media and apologizes and promotes independent journalism by revoking the directive to close down the news outlets. Today's meeting also discussed whether all government functions and the Chief Minister can be boycotted if necessary. Also soon the Assembly of Journalists has decided to hold a convention with journalists, newspaper workers and hawkers in the state.
