Mounting tension has been reported from Bidyabil area of Khowai from where a retrenched teacher belonging to the 10,323 group Gurupada Debbarma was kidnapped by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) jawans along with his younger brother in February this year. Since then Gurupada and his younger brother have been rotting in Bangladesh jail over the past five months with no prospect of early release. Neither the state police nor the BSF has taken any initiative to secure the release of Gurupada and his younger brother in spite of the fact that they did no wrong.

Yesterday a delegation of retrenched 10,323 teachers met in deputation with the DGP V.S.Yadav and urged upon him to take an initiative to have the teacher and his younger brother released from Bangladesh custody. The DGP is reported to have assured the delegation of taking an initiative in this regard. Speaking to media on the issue the leader of the delegation Himangshu Debbarma said that since his retrenchment from service Gurupada had been surviving by cultivating his plot of agricultural land beyond the border fencing in Bidyabil area and also by rearing and tending domestic animals . It as on February 27 that Gurupada and his younger brother had gone to their agricultural field beyond the border to work but they were illegally kidnapped by the BGB jawans on duty nearby and put in custody. Despite efforts made by the family the duo could not return and are rotting in jail in Bangladesh’s Chunarughat area. Before going to their land the two brothers had deposited with BSF authority their identity cards and later their family approached various authorities for securing the release of their members but to no avail.

The incident has triggered mounting tension in the Bidyabil and other tribal-dominated areas of Khowai but the ruling party and the administration have done nothing so far in this regard. Himangshu made it clear that unless the administration arranged for the release of the two brothers an agitational programme would be launched soon.
