Shortfall in coal supply because of a host of reasons has started having impact on power generation and distribution system in different parts of the country. How the shortfall in coal production and supply started is still not known but many states have started making SOS calls to Centre. The union minister for power R.K.Singh assured concerned people a few days ago that coal supply would remain normal and there would be no disruption in power generation and supply. Since then the union home minister Amit Shah has also held meeting and sounded reassuring notes but the situation seems to be deteriorating.

The Assam Power Distribution Company Limited has issued a 'Public Notice' stating "due to limited coal availability , the generation of power from Thermal Generating Stations has decreased considerably . The power position is clearly at critical level and power outages/load shedding may be inevitable. Kindly bear with us and use electricity judiciously . Energy saved is energy generated. Inconvenience caused is highly regretted". Even though Thermal generating stations in Tripura all run on natural gas produced here , the rest of northeast is likely to be adversely affected unless coal supply is normalized to the Thermal stations is normalized.
