Bru Resettlement: Bloody clash erupted at Panisagar, one agitator shot dead, tension runs high

Agartala, Nov 21: An agitator was shot dead in a bloody clash erupted between supporters of the Joint Movement Committee and security personnel at Panisagar area of Unakoti district today morning.
The victim has been identified as Sukanta Das(45), a carpenter of Dasda in Kanchanpur subdivision. Several left injured in the clashes sparking panic in Panisagar, Kanchanpur, Damcherra. Senior police officials rushed to the spot with heavy reinforcement to defuse the tension.
Sources said, thousands of Joint Movement Committee supporters defying the prohibitory order proceeding from Kanchanpur to Dharmanagar with holding placards opposing Bru resettlement.
Around 10.30 pm, security personnel stopped the rally at Panisagar leading to a bloody clash between two sides. As the situation was going out of control, the security personnel charged tear gas shells but it did not work. At last, the security personnel opened fire that resulted in the death of an agitator.
Reports said, several agitators and jawans were also suffered multiple injuries in the clash triggering panic all over. The drastic step came after a failed attempt by District Magistrate (DM), North Nagesh Kumar, who had a meeting with the leaders of Joint Movement Committee in SDM Office, Panisagar.
The indefinite strike called in protest against Bru resettlement in Kanchanpur subdivision has entered its sixth day today. An uneasy calm prevails in the entire Kanchanpur and Panisagar subdivisions as the people joined the movement in strong number.
