ADC election : fear of postponement haunts opposition , demand for timely polls

By Our Correspondent

Agartala February 13 ,2020 : Fear of postponement of ADC election has raised hackles of the opposition with the chief executive member (CEM) of ADC Radhacharan Debbarma stridently demanding timely polls. "We support the proposal for raising the number of seats in the ADC from present 30 (28 elective plus 2 nominated) to fifty but this should not be a pretext for postponing or delaying the election ; the regional parties should also realize the consequences of postponement and demand timely polls" said Radhacharan Debbarma.

The fear of delay in holding the election has risen because the term of the incumbent council of ADC comes to an end on May 17 and issuing of notification has to be done ahead of one month . But as yet there is no sign of state election commission setting any motion on  preparation for holding the polls in time. In the last session of the state assembly a private members resolution was passed demanding increase in number of seats in the ADC from 30 to 50 and copy of the resolution has been sent to union home ministry .

Official sources said that the union home ministry is seriously considering the matter but to act positively upon the assembly's resolution the ADC Act based on 6th schedule has to be amended and it will take time. The first phase of the parliament's budget session ended on February 11 and it will resume on March 2. Even if the required amendment bill is passed , it will take time because the draft bill will have be prepared by the ministry of law and justice and then after due vetting it will have to be passed in parliament. This entire process will lead to delay and the date for issuing notification for the polls one month ahead will be over and the administration of the ADC will have to be taken over by the governor.
For the feared delay in holding polls Radhacharan Debbarma blamed the BJP led state government and said that 'they do not want power to reach people but they believe in holding power for themselves' . He demanded timely polls regardless of increase in seats in the ADC. Former PCC president Gopal Roy also demanded timely polls and setting in motion the process of polls by the state election commission.
