Agartala, January 15, 2022: After breaking all previous records, the  Covid-19 surge amidst strict restrictions  over the celebration of Makar Sankranti, the harvest festivals with traditional fervour and enthusiasm, on Friday , the state has recorded the highest ever single day spike of Covid-19 cases with 1,007 positive cases and the West Tripura district, which  has emerged as new epicenter of Coronavirus infection in Tripura has already assumed the proportion of community transmission of the infection.

During past 24-hours, the state has detected 546 more positive cases with less number of swap sample test through RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kits.

Amidst clear signs and indication of stage 3A that marks of local community transmission, especially in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas, which has witnessing the spike of Covid cases during past one week has again on Friday recorded positivity rate of 21.33 %, which was registered 25.05 % of positivity rate.

After  the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday had a high level virtual meeting with the Chief Minister Baiplab Kumar Deb to contain the spread of infection, the worries of the government have deepened by the fact that the Omicron variant of Covid is extremely infectious though the fatality rate is relatively low.

Official sources said that with a surge in the Covid-19 cases, the state government will take more diverse measures and curb on gatherings to control and curb the spread of the infection and from Saturday, the government will impose more restrictions in AMC areas to contain the spread of infection.

Meanwhile, again on Friday , the overall Covid positivity rate has jumped to 10.58 % with registering the fresh cases of Covid-19 to 1007, which was registered 9.10  per cent (Thursday) with 916 positive cases.

With a concern note, among the 1007 positive cases, 576 people were tested positive from West Tripura district including from Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas with 21.33% of positivity rate. Altogether 1130 persons were tested in AMC areas, among them 241 persons were tested positive, which contributed to the positivity rate of 21.33 %.

The Health department sources said that with the increase in sample testing, the number of positive cases is also increasing and during past 24-hours, altogether 9,514 swap samples were tested through RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

Sources also said that the majority of the positive cases were detected from travelers in airport and railway stations with travel history from Kolkata and New Delhi and few cases are also detected from the persons who are suffering from influenza-like symptoms.

So far the Health department has not found any Omicron cases, but suspected that there may be many cases of Omicron variant due to sudden surge of positive cases during the past one week.

In the past one week, the state are witnessing a surge in Covid positive cases for the infections of Delta variant of coronavirus and  during past few days ,the active cases of the state has also sharply increasing and on Friday , the total active cases now stand at 3,759, which is the highest in past six months.

Among positive cases detected in the past 24-hours, 62 persons from Sepahijala tested positive, 36 from Khowai district, 42 from Gomati, 91 from South Tripura, 64 from Dhalai, 59 from Unakoti district and 77 more cases from North Tripura district.
