Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) programme begins across Tripura

Agartala, February 1, 2021:  In order to eliminate poliomyelitis (polio) from India by vaccination among all children under five years of age against polio virus,  the Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) programme was held on Sunday across the state.

The West Tripura district  level inauguration programme of intensified pulse polio immunization-2021 held at Vivekananda  community hall under 36 ward of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) at Badharghat area of Agartala on Sunday.

 Local MLA Mimi Majumder director Family Welfare and Preventive Medicine Dr Radha Debbarma, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of West Tripura district Dr Debasish Das and SDM( Sadar) Ashim Saha and other top officials of Health department were present in the inauguration programme.

Speaking in the programme, MLA  Mimi Majumder said that Polio has become the biggest challenge not only Tripura and India but also for the whole world. With the initiatives to eradicate the polio, World Health Assembly has launched pulse polio immunization programme decades ago.

In India it has began the vaccination program to eradicate poliomyelitis (polio) by vaccinating all children under the age of five years against the polio virus in the year 1978, said Majumder adding that though the last reported case of the wild polio in India were in West Bengal and Gujarat on January 13, 2011. She also added that India was declared polio free country in the year 2014, but the disease has not been eradicated from many other countries of the world.

According to officials, there are 62, 454 children in West Tripura district has been targeted for immunization through 757 pulse polio centres across the district.

Dr Debasish Das said that the health workers and ASHA workers of the district will visit in the following two days to provide the immunization in house to house.

On the first day of vaccination it will cover in the selected 4064 booths all across the state and in the following two days will be provided house to house, said a Health official.
