Agartala, Feb 14 2020: Four Land Customs Stations of the Northeast would be directly linked with Bagladesh's Chittagong and Mongla ports to ensure a major connectivity boost between Bangladesh and Northeast.

If everything falls as per the script, trial run between three LCSs of Northeast Dawki in Meghalaya, Sundarkandi in Assam, Akhaura and Srimantapur I Tripura by next two months.

If the connectivity is established, the distance between Kolkata and Northeast would be reduced to half which will save both time and transportation cost.

Before pushing the plan, Asst. Director of Calcutta Port Trust Prashanta Kumar and Dy Traffic Manager, the Ministry of Shipping Girish Thomas visited Srimantapur LCS in Tripura's Sephijala district yesterday to see the existing facilities for transshipment of goods.

Earlier, Kumar had a meeting with officials at Akhaura Integrated Checkpost, one of the busiest LCSs in the Northeast region. "The visit and meeting of Kumar was mainly to check the existing facilities for transshipment of goods after launching of new plan", said an official Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) here.

As per the plan, the four NE LCSs would be connected with Chittagong and Mongla ports by using land connectivity of Bangladesh. On October 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina signed an agreement- Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) allowing India to access Chittagong and Mongla ports.

The agreement is aimed at facilitating transshipment of goods from Kolkata to Northeast through Bangladesh soil. "The distance between Kolkata and Agartala or Cachar will be around 600 km against the existing distance of 1200 km. It will be beneficial for the Northeast immensely", said the official.
