Field intervention planning for value addition of medicinal sweet potato organised

The ICAR – Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram along with their partner agency Multi Technology Testing Centre & Vocational Training Centre (MTTC&VTC), College of Fisheries, CAU (I), Lembucherra are currently implementing a Nutrition-sensitive extension programme "Rainbow Diet Campaign" in the Sepahijala and Dhalai districts to combat Vitamin A deficiency and promote general wellness through biofortifoed sweet potato varieties released by ICAR-CTCRI. As a part of the programme an awareness programme on biofortified sweet potato varieties- Bhu Sona (orange-fleshed rich in B-Carotene, a pre-cursor of Vitamin A) and Bhu Krishna (Purple fleshed rich in anthocyanin for cancer prevention and cure) , was organised in the Kalamkai Bari village in Gomti district in Tripura. 

This capacity building was organised in the presence of by Sri. Arun Kumar Roy, ADM & Collector, Gomti district who motivated and encouraged the women farmers to diversify their farm income by producing and marketing value added products from biofortifoed sweet potato and banana. The  project Team comprising of Dr. P. Sethuraman Sivakumar (Team leader – ICAR-CTCRI), Dr K. Laxminarayana, and Dr H. Kesava Kumar from ICAR-CTCRI along with Dr Mahesh Tengli (Team leader – Tripura, MTTC&VTC) imparted experiential learning on chips making from biofortified sweet potato for 25 aspiring women entrepreneurs belong to Nukhung Humkari Vandan Kendra,  in the Kalamkai Bari village. During the training, few value added products from biofortifed sweet potato  like chips and pasta were demonstrated to the farmers. 

Realising the importance of translating the learning into viable entrepreneurship, the project Team interacted with Shri. Raval H. Kumar, I.A.S., District Magistrate & Collector in the presence of by Sri. Arun Kumar Roy, ADM & Collector and explained about the project and showed various products developed from biofortified sweet potato. The DM & Collector, urged the ICAR-CTCRI scientists to help the SHGs in Gomti district to produce and market biofortified sweet potato.  During the meeting, it was decided to expand activities of the proposed "Tuber Crops Information and Entrepreneurship Facilitation Centre" at MTTC& VTC, Lembucherra to Gomti district to create viable women entrepreneurship.
