Tripura University (A Central University) celebrated a significant achievement in academic and scientific research during its Foundation Day celebrations, as Dr. Pratap Chandra Acharya, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy, was conferred two prestigious honours by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tripura, Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.
Dr. Acharya received the Highest Research Grants Award-2026 and the Prestigious Fellowship Award-2026 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to pharmaceutical research, innovation and academic development. He emerged as the sole faculty member of the university to receive honours in two distinct categories at the ceremony, marking a notable achievement in the institution’s academic journey.
The recognition assumes particular significance in view of Dr. Acharya’s contribution to strengthening research infrastructure at Tripura University. He has secured extramural research funding amounting to ₹4.76 crore from the Government of India, described as the largest such research grant received in the history of the university. The funding facilitated the establishment of a state-of-the-art Drug Metabolomics Laboratory at the university.
The laboratory has emerged as an important research and training facility equipped with advanced scientific instruments and has supported research and technical activities involving institutions including IITs, NITs, Central Universities, State Universities and forensic laboratories. Over the past three years, the facility has contributed to high-impact research publications, specialised training programmes and national-level workshops, thereby creating wider opportunities for scientific collaboration and capacity building in the region.
Dr. Acharya’s international academic exposure has further strengthened his research profile. He was awarded the Commonwealth Professional Fellowship-2023 and undertook the fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. His academic credentials also include postgraduate and doctoral degrees from IIT (BHU), Varanasi, and Panjab University, Chandigarh. In addition, he has received an EMBO Fellowship at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, along with several national fellowships awarded by the Government of India.
While conferring the honours, Tripura University acknowledged Dr. Acharya’s significant and sustained contributions to pharmaceutical research, drug discovery and innovation, as well as his commitment to academic advancement and institutional development.
The dual recognition is being viewed as an encouraging development for Tripura University, particularly at a time when strengthening research capacity, attracting competitive funding and promoting interdisciplinary scientific collaboration have become increasingly important for higher education institutions.
Accepting the honours, Dr. Acharya attributed his achievements to the collective support of his teachers, mentors, collaborators, research scholars and students, as well as his family. He also expressed gratitude to the university administration and well-wishers for their continued encouragement.
The achievement has been welcomed by faculty members, research scholars and students of Tripura University. They observed that Dr. Acharya’s research initiatives and efforts to develop advanced laboratory infrastructure could provide greater opportunities for young researchers and contribute to the growth of pharmaceutical and scientific research in Tripura.
The recognition therefore extends beyond an individual academic achievement, highlighting the growing potential of Tripura University as a centre for advanced research, innovation and scientific collaboration in the Northeast.
