The greatest casualty of the information technology revolution that took off since the late nineties is possibly the publication of magazine meant for leisurely reading by subscribers as well as inquisitive readers . There was a time when readers used to wait eagerly for global magazines such as ‘Time’ , ‘Newsweek’, ‘Life’ , ‘The Economist’ , ‘Far Eastern Economic Review’ and others. There was no dearth of literary or political magazines for Bengali readers also as issuance of the latest editions of ‘Desh’, ‘Prabasi’, ‘Kali Kalam’, ‘Krittiwas’ and the short-lived ‘Paribartan’ had ready and avid market .
But a subtle change seemed palpable first from the beginning of long and detailed weekly supplements published by daily newspapers, followed by the invasion of television . Soon followed the mushrooming of cable TV news and entertainment channels and the ubiquitous mobile and online platforms for cinema and , above all, the seemingly all-powerful social media. All this has taken time off the eyes and interest of readers.
Given this context, the initiative taken by Kakoli Nath Choudhury of Dharma Nagar in publishing a quarterly magazine titled ‘Safalya’ (success) seems to be quite a bold one. Spread out on all of 72 glossy pages except the front and back covers , the very first issue of ‘Safalya’ appears to be impressive , going by the rich contents of articles, short stories, poems, interviews and other casual writings. Many eminent personalities of the state have conveyed their printed good wishes to the magazine and its female editor Kakali Nath Choudhury who said that , to begin with , her venture will be a quarterly one . This is natural because over and above talent and skill of editing , printing and quality writing, she will also be in urgent need of financial viability to keep her dream child running .
The very first edition of the ‘Safalya’ contains well informed articles on ‘Glorious Chapter of Tripura’s Media World’, ‘NCRB Report’ , ‘Durga Puja in the ‘Durgabari Temple during princely rule’ and other articles including a special message from SP (north) Abinash Rai. This is sure to impress the reader but the richness of content as well as the quality of printing must be sustained to make the new magazine a grand success , for even in the age of relatively easy access to information, knowledge and entertainment, a magazine with rich content can achieve success by wining favour from inquisitive readers.
