Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Monday announced that special green corridors will soon be created across the state to facilitate the rapid movement of ambulances carrying emergency patients, with the aim of preventing delays caused by traffic congestion.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Saha said a series of meetings had already been held regarding the movement of ambulances, particularly those transporting patients from outside the state capital. He said the proposed green corridor system would ensure that ambulances can move without getting trapped in traffic jams during medical emergencies.

“We will set up a green corridor so that patients do not get stuck in traffic jams,” the Chief Minister said.

The announcement came as the state government highlighted a broader effort to strengthen Tripura's healthcare infrastructure and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced treatment.

Government aims to reduce outside-state referrals

Dr. Saha said the state government was working with responsibility to provide better medical services to the people of Tripura. According to him, infrastructure at the state's major referral hospitals is being upgraded with modern medical facilities.

He said the number of patients being referred outside Tripura for treatment has significantly declined, and the government's objective is to bring such referrals down to zero by expanding specialised healthcare facilities within the state.

The Chief Minister identified improved infrastructure, faster medical services and better hospital cleanliness as key objectives of the government's healthcare initiatives.

New ICU and CSSD facilities inaugurated yesterday at GB Hospital Dr. Saha made the remarks while inaugurating the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) facilities at the Super Specialty Block of Government Medical College and GBP Hospital in Agartala.

The newly inaugurated ICU facility has nine beds each for male and female patients, according to the report.

The CSSD is intended to strengthen sterilisation and infection-control systems at the hospital, which is one of Tripura's major referral healthcare institutions.

The Chief Minister said the government is also focusing on providing advanced training to doctors and healthcare workers so that modern medical facilities can be operated more effectively.

Digital healthcare services being expanded

Dr. Saha also highlighted the government's efforts to introduce and expand digital services across hospitals in the state.

He said digital healthcare services are already available in several hospitals and that the introduction of new ICUs and CSSDs would further strengthen the state's healthcare delivery system.

The government, he said, is seeking to combine modern infrastructure, trained medical personnel and technology-driven services to improve patient care.

Tripura gets 100 additional MBBS seats

In another major development for the state's medical education sector, Government Medical College and AGMC has received approval for 100 additional MBBS seats, taking its annual intake from 150 to 250 seats.

The increase will be applicable from the 2026–27 academic session and is expected to create additional opportunities for students from Tripura and the wider Northeast to pursue medical education.
