The Directorate of Elementary Education on Monday began a five-day training programme for 87 teachers from three districts to strengthen the implementation of pre-primary education introduced in the state from the 2026-27 academic year.

The training, being held at Maharani Tulsibati Girls’ Higher Secondary School here, will continue till September 25 and covers teachers from Khowai, Sepahijala and West Tripura districts.

Director of Elementary Education Dr Samit Roy Choudhury, who inaugurated the programme, stressed the need to create a safe and supportive school environment for young children.

He said teachers have an important role in ensuring that children entering school at the age of three receive support for their mental, social, practical and behavioural development along with a foundation in basic education.

Joint Director of Elementary Education Harshita Biswas said the implementation of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) marked a shift from conventional lecture-based teaching to activity-based and child-centred learning.

She urged the teachers to apply the skills acquired during the training in their respective schools and stressed the need to understand child psychology and individual learning needs.

The programme includes sessions on child psychology, classroom management, play-based learning, age-appropriate assessment and school observation. Practical training on preparation of teaching-learning materials, including puppets and their use in classrooms, is also part of the programme.

On the second day, Dr Hillol Mukherjee, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, will conduct a session on child psychology, officials said.

Of the 87 participating teachers, 46 are from Khowai, 34 from Sepahijala and seven from West Tripura. They have been assigned to newly introduced pre-primary sections in their respective schools.

Ten master trainers are conducting hands-on sessions on various aspects of ECCE, officials said.

The training programme has been organised in line with the National Education Policy, 2020, with emphasis on child-centred, joyful and activity-based learning.

The Directorate said it has been taking steps to provide infrastructure, teacher training and teaching-learning materials for the expansion of pre-primary education in the state.
