A late-night security scare has been reported at the girls’ hostel of the National Law University, Tripura (NLU Tripura), after two young men allegedly entered the hostel premises and behaved inappropriately with students, prompting the university authorities to lodge a police complaint.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred late Friday night when two youths allegedly entered the girls’ hostel in an intoxicated condition. The incident reportedly created panic among the students, with allegations of misbehaviour, threats and an alleged attempt at sexual misconduct involving one of the students.

The university’s acting Registrar, Dr Jayanta Dhar, reportedly lodged a written complaint at the Airport Police Station. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against two youths identified as Nirmal Banik, a resident of the Post Chowmuhani area of Agartala, and Srikanta Pal, a resident of Joynagar.

Police subsequently arrested both accused. A numberless motorcycle allegedly used by the two youths was also seized and later impounded.

According to police sources, information about the incident reached the police at around 8:30 pm after students contacted them regarding the alleged intrusion. The two youths allegedly entered the hostel while under the influence of alcohol. When security personnel attempted to stop them, they reportedly claimed to be law students and allegedly pushed the security guard aside before entering the hostel premises.

The complaint further alleges that the youths subsequently pressured students to assemble at a particular place inside the hostel. They allegedly threatened students with sexual harassment if they did not come outside. The situation reportedly became tense, and there was also a serious allegation that one of the students was subjected to an attempted sexual assault.

Police have said that the entire incident, including the circumstances under which the two youths managed to enter the hostel and the allegations made by the students, is being investigated. The accused were arrested under Airport Police Station case No. 55/2026 and questioned by police.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over security arrangements at the NLU Tripura girls’ hostel, where students from different parts of the country reside while pursuing legal studies. Questions have also been raised about how outsiders were able to enter the hostel premises late at night.

The latest incident has reportedly caused considerable anxiety among the hostel residents. The university authorities and security personnel are now expected to examine the security arrangements and the circumstances surrounding the alleged breach.

The incident also comes against the backdrop of an earlier security scare at the girls’ hostel of GB Pant Hospital/Agartala Government Medical College, where a youth had allegedly entered the hostel at night, entered a student’s room, snatched her mobile phone and pushed her, causing injury. That incident had also triggered concerns over the security of women’s hostels in the state.

With the latest NLU Tripura incident involving allegations of unauthorised entry, threats and attempted sexual misconduct, attention has once again turned to the need for stronger access-control and night-time security measures at student hostels.
