Tripura is set to significantly expand its cricket infrastructure, with the State Government earmarking 30 acres of land at Sekerkot for the development of a state-of-the-art cricket academy aimed at strengthening player development in Tripura and potentially serving aspiring cricketers from across the Northeast.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced the initiative while addressing the Annual Award Distribution Ceremony-2026 organised by the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) at Rabindra Bhavan in Agartala on Saturday.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed academy at Sekerkot will form a major part of the State's long-term plan to create modern facilities for cricket training. He said the facility would not be confined to players from Tripura and could provide training opportunities to cricketers from other northeastern states as well.
Dr. Saha said the State Government would continue to extend the necessary legal and administrative support to the TCA for the development of cricket in Tripura. He also acknowledged the role of the TCA and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in creating opportunities for Tripura's cricketers to compete at the national level.
The Chief Minister said cricket has gained substantial popularity in Tripura and that increasing numbers of parents are encouraging their children to take up the sport. The proposed academy is expected to provide young players with access to more structured and professional training facilities.
Alongside the Sekerkot academy, the State Government is also working towards completing a much-awaited international cricket stadium in Tripura.
Dr. Saha said construction of the stadium is nearing completion and expressed hope that it would soon be available to host major cricket fixtures, including national and international-level matches.
The stadium is expected to provide Tripura with a larger venue for competitive cricket and create additional opportunities for the State to host high-profile matches.
