Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant at Chapar in Dhubri district, marking the beginning of one of the largest single investment projects in the state.
The project, involving an estimated investment of Rs.48,000 crore, is expected to significantly expand Assam’s power-generation capacity while creating large-scale employment and business opportunities. According to the company, the project could generate up to 20,000 jobs during the construction phase and around 5,000 jobs after commissioning.
The foundation-stone ceremony was attended by senior Assam government officials, industry representatives, local community representatives and Jeet Adani, Director of the Adani Group.
The Chapar power plant will consist of four units of 800 MW each, with the project based on ultra-supercritical technology designed to improve generation efficiency and incorporate modern environmental safeguards.
Commissioning is scheduled to take place in phases beginning December 2030. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply power for Assam’s household, commercial and industrial requirements and strengthen the state's overall energy infrastructure.
The project is part of a broader Rs.63,000-crore power investment planned by the Adani Group in Assam. Of this, approximately Rs.48,000 crore is earmarked for the Chapar thermal power project, while around Ra.15,000 crore is proposed for two Pumped Storage Plants with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW through Adani Green Energy Limited.
Adani Energy Solutions Limited is also implementing smart-metering projects in Assam as part of efforts to modernise the state's electricity distribution network.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the Chapar project as a major outcome of the investment momentum generated by the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0.
He said Assam is emerging as an energy hub in the Northeast, with several major energy projects in the pipeline.
