The ‘Tipra Motha’ supremo Pradyot Kishore has resumed his social media activism by posting live a longish commentary on the state of politicians in Tripura. He said ‘there is a class of people in politics whose priority is to remain with the right side of power rather than follow and act upon ideological convictions’. What he sought to flag with his commentary is the tendency among a section of politicians to switch sides and become turncoats in partisan interest at the opportune moment.
Who he was taking the dig at is not clear but Pradyot categorically stated that ‘those who are raising Jai Sriram slogans in Tripura now may raise the slogan of red salute in Delhi in case there is a change of power in the Loksabha elections of 2029’. What drives such attitudes among politicians is the quest for power and pelf and the desperation to remain with the powers that be, according to Pradyot’s assessment. He added that this class of politicians abound in Tripura.
He opined that there is a tendency among all political parties to drive rivals into a corner and gain the upper hand for the sake of power and pelf at the cost of policy, principle and ideology. He however did not judge all the parties by the same standard. “In relative terms such tendencies are less in a party like the CPI (M) which is politically organized and which works on a certain ideology and set of policies and principles ; however parties like the BJP and Congress are different, power play plays an important role in these parties” said Pradyot.
However , Pradyot did not spare his own party, the ‘Tipra Motha’ from his critical comments , saying similar tendencies mar the functioning of the party at the lower level . “It is because of my presence that at the upper level such power-crazed jockeying is relatively less but it does exist at the lower level of the party” said Pradyot. His acolytes in the party attributed Pradyot’s comments to his frustration with the political set up in the state and lack of principles and commitment to public welfare among politicians in BJP and Congress but Pradyot’s commentary has sparked reaction among politicians in the non-left parties and they may come out with a response soon.
