Heavy rainfall failed to dampen the enthusiasm of thousands of fitness enthusiasts as more than 5,000 runners participated in the Golden City Marathon, organised by Swarnakamal Jewellers in Agartala on Sunday.
Promoted by the organisers as one of the biggest marathon events in Northeast India, the event turned Agartala into a vibrant sporting hub, bringing together runners from Tripura as well as several other states.
The marathon started from Umakanta School and culminated at Albert Ekka War Memorial Park, with participants taking to the streets despite persistent and heavy rain.
According to the organisers, more than 7,000 participants registered online for the marathon, while over 5,000 runners eventually took part in the event.
The participants included runners from Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, besides a large number of athletes and fitness enthusiasts from different parts of Tripura.
The substantial turnout despite adverse weather conditions highlighted the growing popularity of organised running and fitness events in the state.
The heavy rainfall presented an additional challenge for the participants, but young runners, women, men and senior citizens all took part with considerable enthusiasm.
For many participants, the marathon was not merely a competitive sporting event but also an opportunity to promote fitness, healthy living, discipline and community participation.
The presence of senior citizens alongside younger runners also added to the inclusive character of the event.
The Golden City Marathon featured separate categories for men, women and senior citizens, allowing participants from different age groups and backgrounds to compete.
The organisers also announced prize money across the various categories. According to the details provided by the organisers, the event carried a total prize pool of Rs. 1,05,000, with prize money of Rs. 35,000 across the respective categories.
