Incidents of crimes against women continue in Tripura, number of dowry deaths rise

Despite claims made by the police administration to the contrary occasionally , the incidents of crimes against women continue unabated . This has come out in the state assembly in the course of answers given by chief minister Dr Manik Saha in his capacity as home minister to an ‘unstarred’ question put by ‘Tipra Motha’ MLA Swapna Debbarma.

As per the data given there were 9 bride killings in the state in the year 2023-2024. This figure rose to 14 in the year 2024-2025 but there have been so far only 11 incidents of bride killings in the year 2025-2026. But the more alarming scenario is presented by the profile of dowry related deaths. There had been 22 dowry deaths across the state in the year 2023-2024, followed by 19 in the year 2024-2025 but in the next year-that is, 2025-2026-the figure of dowry related deaths shot up to a fearsome 59.

A variation has also been noticed in the incidents of rapes also . In the year 2023-2024 altogether 132 incidents of rapes were registered in various police stations across the states. This figure rose to 179 in the year 2024-2025 but the next year-that is, 2025-2026 saw a decline in incidents of rapes as the figure was 145 .

While providing the written answer the chief minister who also holds the home portfolio said that the police authority have been specially instructed to ensure that relevant sections of law are strictly enforced to prevent rapes and other forms of crimes against women all over the state. There has also been improvement in the matter of convictions in incidents of crimes against women, the chief minister added.
