Man dies after being beaten on suspicion of cattle theft in Kalyanpur

A 45-year-old man died after he was allegedly beaten by a group of people on suspicion of cattle theft at Baghber area of Kalyanpur in Tripura's Khowai district on Wednesday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Jalil Rahman, a resident of Ghilatali area of Kalyanpur.

According to local sources, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when Rahman was allegedly taking a cow towards Baganbazar, where a weekly cattle market is held on Wednesdays. Some people reportedly suspected that the cow had been stolen and allegedly surrounded and assaulted him.

On receiving information, police from Kalyanpur police station reached the spot and rescued Rahman in a critical condition. He was taken to Kalyanpur Hospital, where he died shortly after being admitted.

The incident led to tension in the area, following which Khowai district Additional Superintendent of Police Justin Joseph, acting Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Teliamura Samir Roy and Kalyanpur police station officer-in-charge Ashish Sarkar visited the spot.

Police have registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.

The circumstances leading to the assault and the death are being investigated. The allegation that the deceased was involved in cattle theft has not been established, and no further details regarding the case were immediately available.
