Tripura BJP Seeks Postponement of SSR Schedule Amid Village Council Elections

The Tripura Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Chief Electoral Officer (ACEO) Suman Banik, raising concerns over the scheduling of work related to the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls during the period of the upcoming Village Council elections.

A delegation of the state BJP met the Assistant Electoral Officer and pointed out that the SSR-related responsibilities would coincide with the election process, potentially placing an additional workload on Booth Level Officers (BLOs), who are also required to perform important election-related duties.

The BJP argued that it would be difficult for BLOs to efficiently carry out the work associated with the Special Summary Revision while simultaneously being engaged in the preparations and responsibilities connected with the Village Council elections. According to the party, the overlap of the two processes could create practical difficulties for election officials and affect the smooth conduct of both exercises.

The delegation therefore urged the Chief Electoral Officer through ACEO to consider postponing or rescheduling the SSR programme so that the revision-related work can be undertaken without overlapping with the Village Council election process. The party maintained that an adjustment in the schedule would allow BLOs to perform their responsibilities more effectively and ensure that the electoral revision exercise is completed in an orderly manner.

Rajya Sabha MP and senior BJP leader Rajib Bhattacharjee was present during the submission of the memorandum, along with other members of the Tripura Pradesh BJP state committee leadership.

The BJP's representation comes at a time when preparations for the Village Council elections are underway, with political parties and election authorities engaged in various organisational and administrative activities. The party's latest demand is expected to draw attention to the workload on grassroots-level election officials and the need for proper coordination between the electoral-roll revision process and the local body election schedule.
