BJP-Tipra Motha high-level meeting likely before Sep 8 ahead of village committee polls

A high-level meeting between the BJP and its ruling coalition partner Tipra Motha is likely to be held in New Delhi before September 8, as negotiations over a possible alliance for the upcoming village committee (VC) elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) gather momentum, party sources said.

The development comes amid the visit of a BJP central delegation led by National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh to Tripura. The delegation includes BJP North East coordinator Sambit Patra and co-coordinator Rajiv Babbar, besides Tripura in-charge Dr Rajdeep Roy and Assam and Tripura General Secretary (Organisation) GR Ravindra Raju.

The BJP state leadership described the visit as an organisational tour, while party sources said the central leaders were taking stock of the organisation and assessing its strengths and weaknesses ahead of the VC polls.

BJP state president Abhishek Debroy said several organisational issues had been discussed following the arrival of the central leaders. Asked about the VC elections, he said the party welcomed the polls and was capable of contesting them.

On the possibility of an alliance with Tipra Motha, Debroy said discussions were underway and the public would be informed once there was a breakthrough.

Meanwhile, Tipra Motha has also begun preparations for the elections. Its 14-member election committee has authorised the local leadership to select candidates, according to a senior party leader.

Asked about the possibility of a meeting with the BJP, the leader said there were no meetings scheduled over the next few days but indicated that a meeting could be convened in New Delhi before September 8, the last date for filing nominations.

The possibility of an alliance has gained significance following the BJP's performance in the recent TTAADC elections, where it contested independently while Tipra Motha retained a strong position.

Sources said discussions between the two parties were continuing at multiple levels, with sections within Tipra Motha also favouring an electoral understanding. However, differences over the terms of any seat-sharing arrangement remain to be resolved.
