Cattle smuggling accused remanded in judicial custody over alleged BSF assault

A court in Kailashahar has extended the judicial custody of Suleman Ali, who was arrested in connection with the alleged assault on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Bhagwan Nagar, till September 11.

The incident took place on August 26 when BSF personnel, acting on information about suspected cattle smuggling, intercepted a Bolero pickup carrying eight cattle. Two youths travelling in the vehicle reportedly fled from the spot.

The BSF personnel were waiting for a larger vehicle to transport the seized cattle to Kailashahar police station when a group of local youths allegedly attacked them using stones, bricks, iron rods and bamboo sticks.

The attackers also allegedly attempted to snatch firearms from the BSF personnel.

Two BSF troopers suffered serious injuries in the incident, while two BSF vehicles were vandalised. The injured personnel were initially taken to Dharmanagar Hospital and later shifted to a BSF hospital in Panisagar for treatment.

Following the incident, the BSF lodged a complaint at Kailashahar police station, based on which Suleman Ali was arrested. He was initially remanded in judicial custody on August 27 and was produced before the court again on September 1.

The clash also triggered a road blockade by villagers on the Kailashahar-Dharmanagar road. The protesters had demanded action against the BSF personnel involved in the incident. The blockade was subsequently withdrawn after police assured them of appropriate action.
