Six FIRs registered over ‘Jangi Andolan’ remark by former Tripura CM Manik Sarkar: Dr Saha

Six FIRs have been registered in Tripura in connection with a remark attributed to former chief minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar about a protest potentially taking the form of a “Jangi Andolan”, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha informed the state Assembly on Monday.

Dr Saha said the first FIR was registered at West Agartala police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by Prabir Roy against Sarkar.

According to the chief minister, the former chief minister allegedly made the statement between 12 pm and 1 pm on August 10 while addressing a political programme. The remarks were later published in local newspapers, he said.

The complaint alleged that Sarkar had said a protest would intensify and assume the form of a “Jangi Andolan” if the government did not meet the demands being raised.

The complainant further alleged that such a statement by an influential person could incite people against the government and affect peace and public order. It was also apprehended that anti-social elements could use such remarks to take the law and order situation into their own hands, potentially affecting public safety, Dr Saha said.

Subsequently, five Zero FIRs were registered at Kalyanpur, Khowai, Bishalgarh, Kadamtala and Teliamura police stations, taking the total number of FIRs to six.

Dr Saha told the House that the five Zero FIRs had been tagged with the original case registered at West Agartala police station. Further investigation into the matter is underway, he said.

The chief minister also said that necessary legal action had been taken in connection with the cases. He maintained that the government would act in accordance with law on matters concerning peace and public order, irrespective of the political identity of the person involved.

The matter was raised in the Assembly after MLA Sushanta Deb and Minister Sushanta Chowdhury sought a statement from the chief minister on the issue.

The cases concern an allegation against Sarkar, and no finding of guilt has been made against him. His response to the allegations was not immediately available.
