Proposed Phased Withdrawal of Battery Autos Sparks Livelihood Concerns in Tripura

The Tripura Government’s proposed plan to withdraw battery-operated rickshaws, commonly known as battery autos or e-rickshaws, in phases has raised serious concerns over the livelihood of thousands of people who depend directly or indirectly on these vehicles for their daily income.

According to an official meeting notice issued by the Transport Department, Government of Tripura, a meeting has been scheduled for 20 August 2026 at 12 noon in the office chamber of the Secretary, Transport Department, at the Secretariat Building. The stated purpose of the meeting is to draw up plan for withdrawal of all Battery Operated Rickshaws / E-Rickshaws in Phase manner.

The meeting will involve senior officials from the Urban Development Department, Agartala Municipal Corporation, Transport Department and Law Department, along with the Joint Transport Commissioner, Deputy Transport Commissioner and Chief Motor Vehicle Inspectors.

The proposal could become a major livelihood issue if implemented without a proper rehabilitation, compensation or alternative-employment mechanism. Battery autos have become an important component of Tripura’s urban and semi-urban transport system, particularly for short-distance travel and last-mile connectivity. For many drivers, operating a battery auto is their primary source of family income. Any large-scale withdrawal could therefore affect not only drivers but also vehicle owners, financiers, mechanics, battery-repair workers, spare-parts traders and others associated with the sector.

A significant number of vehicle owners have invested their personal savings or taken loans to purchase battery autos. If these vehicles are withdrawn before owners have recovered their investment or completed their loan repayments, they could face substantial financial difficulties. The Government would therefore need to consider the economic consequences of the proposed policy before implementing it.
