One Hour of Rain Brings Agartala to a Standstill, Raising Fresh Questions Over Smart City Drainage

Even a brief spell of rain exposed the fragile state of the capital's urban drainage system on Wednesday, as several parts of Agartala witnessed severe waterlogging, disrupting normal life and traffic.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala recorded 13.6 mm of rainfall up to 5:30 PM, while the weather office has also forecast further rainfall and issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Tripura over the next 24 hours.

Despite the rainfall lasting for barely an hour, Lichubagan's Albert Ekka Park area, along with several other localities across the state capital, was submerged under stagnant water. Roads turned into pools, forcing commuters and vehicles to halt as water inundated major thoroughfares. The sudden flooding caused severe inconvenience to office-goers, students, shopkeepers and residents.

The situation has once again raised serious concerns over the effectiveness of Agartala Smart City's drainage infrastructure. Residents pointed out that if such widespread waterlogging can occur after a relatively short spell of rain, it reflects shortcomings in the planning, execution and maintenance of the city's drainage network. Many questioned whether the significant investments made under the Smart City Mission have translated into durable urban infrastructure capable of handling even moderate rainfall.

With the IMD warning of more heavy rain in the coming days, citizens fear that the situation could worsen unless immediate measures are taken to improve water drainage and prevent flooding in vulnerable areas. The recurring waterlogging has renewed demands for a comprehensive review of the Smart City drainage system and urgent corrective action to ensure that the capital is better prepared for the monsoon season.\
