More than four hundred surrendered militants belonging to now disbanded groups have threatened to launch a road blockade programme on independence day on August 15 unless the state government meets their demands beforehand. This has raised security concerns ahead of the independence day celebration.
The blockade programme was announced in an interaction with the media yesterday by surrendered militant Kablajoy Tripura in the tribal hostel in Melarmath area of Agartala. Speaking to media persons Kablajoy Tripura said that it was on April 9 2024 that more than 400 militants had surrendered in Jampui area to the state government but the peace agreement on the basis of which they had surrendered have not yet been fulfilled by the state government even though more than two years have passed. The surrendered militants belonged to both the NLFT and the ATTF.
Kablajay said that the state government, as provided for in the peace agreement, has not yet provided rehabilitation benefits to the returnees to mainstream and court cases against them are yet to be withdrawn. As a result the returnees are called upon to appear in courts at regular intervals. The surrendered militants have demanded issuance of identity cards and implementation of all the terms and assurances given in the peace agreement signed two years ago.
“Unless the Centre and the state government give specific assurances of fulfillment of all our demands before the independence day, we will be left with no other alternative but to launch our planned road blockade on August 15; we have repeatedly approached the state government and Centre over our demands but no positive action has so far been taken” said Kablajay. He expressed resentment over non-fulfilment of demands and the prolonged delay in the process , adding that such delays also make adverse impact on the morale of those who return to normal life in lieu of specific assurances.
