Expansion of PDS, rise in number of beneficiaries , an achievement of the state government

The BJP led Tripura government has achieved a major success in expanding the public distribution system (PDS) network as well as in including beneficiaries under the net of PDS coverage over the past eight years. This has come to light from the official data compiled and shared with media persons by officials of the department of food and civil supply of the state government .

According to the data shared the state now has 9,90,771 ration cards covering 36,95,629 units or families through 2081 fair price shops across the state till July this year. By contrast the corresponding figure for July 2018 was 9,24,981 ration cards for 37,56,594 units or families through 1807 fair price shops. Sources said that the apparent decline in the number of units or families covered will remain almost the same as main applications for ration cards are being processed.

Official sources said that there has been an expansion of rationing network overall and population decline in certain sectors is responsible for lesser number of beneficiary families but this decline is not real as many applications are still pending clearance by the department. The highest growth has been recorded in Sonamura subdivision. “The data shows that the state’s overall ration distribution system has expanded over the period of past eight years and this trend is set to continue ; the Reang resettlers in certain hilly areas of Gandacherra subdivision have also been included in the ration coverage population” sources said . They added that supply from outside is also now uninterrupted even during the monsoon season on account of improvement in the road network, not only in Tripura but in the entire northeast region.
