Power outages, high bills trigger protest outside Sonamura electricity office

Power consumers of Sonamura subdivision staged a protest outside the local office of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) on Monday, alleging frequent power cuts, rising electricity bills and the absence of officials from the office.

The protest continued for several hours, with agitated consumers demanding immediate improvement in power supply and redressal of billing-related grievances.

Several residents alleged that electricity outages were occurring repeatedly throughout the day and night, causing inconvenience to households and businesses, while monthly bills continued to increase.

According to protesters, many consumers visit the office regularly with complaints related to power supply and billing, but often fail to meet senior officials. The absence of officials even during office hours further fuelled public anger, they said.

As the protest intensified, some demonstrators locked the main gate of the electricity office for a brief period, demanding that senior officers come out and address their concerns.

Local residents questioned the basis of what they described as “abnormally high” electricity bills and sought greater transparency in the billing process. Employees at the bill section allegedly referred consumers to higher authorities, adding to the frustration of the protesters.

The demonstration also saw criticism of the overall functioning of public offices, with some participants alleging delays in public services and inadequate staff presence during notified working hours.

No untoward incident was reported during the protest.

Officials of the electricity corporation were not immediately available for comment on the allegations made by the protesters.

Residents warned that if power supply and billing issues were not addressed, a larger section of the public could launch further agitation in the coming days.
