Tripura to expand organ transplant services, focus on awareness: Health Secretary

Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte on Monday said the state government would strengthen organ donation and transplantation services through public awareness, capacity building and expansion of transplant facilities.

Speaking at the Organ Donation Day observation at Pragna Bhavan here, Gitte said awareness was key to the success of the initiative.

"Awareness in the whole state is very important. Today is the first time that National Organ Donation Day is being celebrated on such a large scale in our state," he said.

Gitte said Chief Minister Manik Saha, who was scheduled to attend the programme, could not do so as he was be out of the state, but had directed that the campaign should continue "with full force".

He said the state had signed an agreement with the MOHAN Foundation, one of the country's leading organisations working in organ donation, to strengthen capacity building in hospitals.

"We have sent some teams for training in organ transplant. Not only in kidneys, but in the coming days, we will work on liver and heart," he said.

The Health Secretary said Tripura had already carried out kidney transplantation and would soon start an eye bank at IGM Hospital in addition to the existing facility at GB Hospital.

"We will do a lot of work on cornea transplant. We will also work on bone marrow transplant in our cancer hospital," Gitte said.
