Cultural decay and erosion of values in Tripura seem to have reached a nadir over the past decade. The destruction of peoples properties including rubber gardens, fishes in ponds and other domestic assets as part of political vengeance began much earlier but this has been continuing even now , practically with impunity. Tripura’s southernmost subdivision, Sabroom , was once known as a peaceful area , relatively free from political clashes and fighting but the reality now is alarming.

This is borne out by the destruction of assets and properties of people by political rivals looking for vengeance . Such an incident was witnessed in Harina area under the subdivision last night . Sikha Das (43), the chief of west Harina gram panchayat in the subdivision , had parked a large number of fishlets in her household pond to sell them at profit when they grew up . But this morning the pradhan and her family members waked up to a horrible reality : soon after awaking from sleep this morning the panchayat chief and her family member saw hundreds of half-grown fishlets floating dead on the pond or on its bank.

Having no other alternative the pradhan Sikha Das informed the Sabroom police station and the officer in charge (OC) Apu Das rushed to her home and saw the scene. He noted down all the details to register a FIR but there was no prima facie evidence to suspect or nab any culprit. Sikha Das informed the police party that she had suffered a loss of at least Rs 1.5 lakh because of the mass killing of the fishes with poison. The police party took samples of the dead fishes for forensic test but there was no clue to who acutally had committed the crime. The people of entire Harina area expressed their grave concern over what had happened , fearing the same thing might happen to them also.
