AILU Seeks Judicial Probe into Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar's Death, Submits Memorandum to Governor

The Tripura State Committee of the All India Lawyers' Union (AILU) on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Tripura, urging the constitution of an independent judicial inquiry commission headed by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court to investigate the untimely and unusual death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, IPS.

In its memorandum, the lawyers' body stated that the sudden and unusual demise of the state's highest-ranking police officer has raised widespread public concern and several unanswered questions, making it a matter of significant public importance. The organisation argued that, given the gravity of the incident, relying solely on the routine investigative process would not be sufficient, and that a transparent, impartial and credible judicial inquiry is essential to establish the truth.

AILU emphasized that one of the fundamental principles of the rule of law is that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done. It maintained that an inquiry conducted under the leadership of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court would be the most appropriate and widely acceptable mechanism to ascertain the facts, dispel public doubts and reinforce confidence in the justice delivery system.

The memorandum appealed to the Governor to consider the seriousness of the matter and take, or recommend, the necessary constitutional steps for the constitution of a judicial inquiry commission. It also sought immediate measures to ensure the preservation of all documents, electronic records, forensic samples and other material evidence related to the case to facilitate a fair and comprehensive investigation.

According to AILU, only an independent judicial probe can effectively uncover the actual circumstances surrounding the DGP's death, remove public suspicion and further strengthen people's faith in the Constitution, the rule of law and the administration of justice.

The memorandum was submitted on behalf of the All India Lawyers' Union by Haribal Debnath, LR Khadim, Bhaskar Debbarma, Rajarshi Purkayastha, and Uma Chand.
