Shortage of teachers and infrastructure , students resort to road blockade in Kadamtala

Shortage of teachers and proper infrastructure have assumed serious proportions in schools across the state, leading to frequent protests by students and guardians. Such a two-hour protest in the form of a forced closure of school and road blockade by students was witnessed yesterday in the Kalagangpara HS school under Kadamtala block in Dharma Nagar subdivision of north Tripura.

The blockade by the students had commenced in front of the school gate around 10-00 AM and continued for two hours . After being informed of the blockade the district education officer (DEO) Phiranjan Tripura rushed to the spot and held discussion with the agitating students who raised the problems being faced by them in the school . The students said that there are only 12 teaches for 600 students of the school and , what is worse, there is a severe shortage of subject teachers . There is not a single teacher for students of philosophy in the classes XI and XII. Besides, there is no headmaster in the school and two more graduate teachers are also required without any further delay .

There is also shortage of class rooms in the school and , as a result, students of class XI attend classes on three days a week while students of class XII also do the same. There is no fan in most of the class rooms even during the torrid summer and there is no viable space for cooking midday meal for students. Besides, there is no guard wall around the school and no dining room for students who take midday meal and this is worsened by lack of toilet facility for students. The students described their Kalagangpara HS school as one of the worst in the district in terms of teacher strength and infrastructure .

The DEO Phiranjan Tripura patiently listened to the grievances of the students and admitted their demands were right . He assured them that he would take up the issue with the higher authority in the department and point out all the problems. At his request the students withdrew their blockade programme after two hours but said that if remedial action is not taken they will be forced to restart their agitation.
