The voluntary health association of Tripura (VHAT), Tripura’s leading NGO working on the health sector, organized a daylong seminar today in the conference hall of their headquarter north of Agartala on the evil effects of consuming tobacco in various forms including smoking on human health. The seminar was adorned as chief guest by the minister for social welfare Tinku Roy, west Tripura Zilla Sabhadhipati Bishwajit Shil, chairperson of state womens commission Jharna Debbarma and president of VHAT Srilekha Roy.
Addressing the seminar minister Tinku Roy described it as a matter of regret that despite knowing the evil effects of consuming tobacco in any form people, specially in the northeastern region including Tripura continue to consume tobacco with betel leaf in the form of ‘Zarda’, smoking cigarettes or taking ‘Khaini’ or ‘Gutka’ etc. “This is extremely unfortunate as consumption of tobacco causes cancer of throat, tongue and lungs . “The honourable supreme court had put a blanket ban on smoking in public places way back in 1996 but even now we see people smoking away to glory in public places ; this bad habit should be given up immediately” said Tanku Roy . He also appreciated the initiative taken by VHAT to raise the level of public consciousness about the serious health hazards caused by tobacco .
The other speaker also also spoke on the same line. The president of VHAT Srilekha Roy announced that her organization has been working on this awareness campaign relentlessly and will keep on doing so in future also.
