In a proud moment for Tripura, renowned Indian classical musician Dr. Joyanta Sarkar of Agartala has been granted an Indian Patent for the Tripureshwari Veena, a newly conceptualized and culturally inspired Indian string instrument that celebrates the state's rich musical and spiritual heritage.
The patented Tripureshwari Veena has been conceived as a unique fusion of Indian classical music, Tripura's indigenous artistic traditions, scientific innovation, and spiritual philosophy. Inspired by Maa Tripureshwari (Tripura Sundari), the revered presiding deity of Tripura and one of India's 51 Shakti Peethas, the instrument has been designed to preserve and promote the state's distinct cultural identity.
According to Dr. Sarkar, the instrument blends the timeless principles of the traditional veena with the craftsmanship, folk musical traditions, and artistic heritage of Tripura. The invention symbolizes the harmonious convergence of spirituality, culture, science, and innovation, reflecting the state's rich legacy while introducing a modern musical instrument for future generations.
The concept document describes the Tripureshwari Veena as a modern Indian classical string instrument that combines features of the traditional slide guitar with the tonal richness of classical instruments such as the veena, sitar, and sarod. It incorporates scientific principles including vibration, resonance, acoustics, harmonics, and wave motion to produce a distinctive and expressive sound suitable for intricate Indian ragas.
A notable feature of the instrument is the inclusion of sympathetic strings, which naturally resonate when corresponding notes are played, creating a deep and sustained tonal quality. The instrument also employs a slide-playing technique that enables smooth transitions between notes (Meend) and the production of microtones (Shrutis), which are essential elements of Indian classical music.
