Tripura Mizoram border dispute to be settled soon , CM optimistic

The longstanding dispute between the state of Mizoram and Tripura over territorial rights along the 109 km border is expected to be settled soon. A meeting over the sensitive issue between the two governments is likely to be held soon following an initiative taken by chief minister Dr Manik Saha. The government of Mizoram has also expressed its keenness to hold discussion for a settlement of the nagging problem which in the past saw security forces of Mizoram encroach frequently on demarcated territory of Tripura. The meeting may take place in the month of August .

Official sources here said that when the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) came off in Shillong this year in the month of June the chief minister Dr Manik Saha took time off his engagement and requested the Mizoram chief minister Pu Lalduhoma to look into the issue and have it finally resolved through bilateral discussion between officials of the two states . The Mizoram chief minister also positively responded to the gesture and agreed to have a bilateral meeting soon.

Sources said that if all goes well the officlals of the two stated headed by respective chief secretaries will sit for the meeting at Agartala and try to find a solution and then the decisions arrived at by the two sides will be placed to the chief ministers of both the states. In the final meeting to be held by the two chief ministers the union mlnister for Doner will remain present. However, the meeting of officials of both the states will come off at Agartala in the month of August.
