An undertrial prisoner lodged at the Bishalgarh Central Correctional Home died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday, with his family demanding an impartial investigation into the incident.
The deceased, identified as Pranab Pal, was a resident of Camper Bazar. He had been lodged in the correctional home for around one-and-a-half months after being arrested in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Family members alleged that the death was not natural and questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident. They claimed that the correctional home authorities had not given a clear account of when, how and under what circumstances Pal died.
They sought a detailed inquiry to determine whether Pal had fallen ill before his death, whether he had received timely medical treatment and whether any unusual incident had occurred inside the correctional home before he died.
Officials said the body had been sent for post-mortem examination after completion of legal formalities. They said the exact cause of death would be established after the post-mortem report was received.
Police said further investigation into the incident was underway.
