BJP state chief accuses CPI(M) of trying to revive political violence in Tripura

BJP Tripura Pradesh president Abhishek Deb Roy on Sunday accused the CPI(M) of attempting to revive political violence in the state and alleged that the principal opposition party had lost the confidence of the people.

Addressing a memorial meeting of late Khagendra Debnath at Kalyanpur in Khowai district, Deb Roy claimed that CPI(M) leaders had no moral authority to face the public. He alleged that the opposition leaders were disconnected from the people because of their past record in government.

The BJP leader further alleged that former chief minister Manik Sarkar and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury were trying to bring back an era of political unrest and violence. He asked whether the people of Tripura wanted a return to what he described as a period marked by political killings, intimidation and vendetta.

Referring to the killing of Khagendra Debnath after the 2004 panchayat elections, Deb Roy alleged that the BJP worker had laid down his life while defending democracy. He also accused the then Left Front government of political violence and repression during its tenure and appealed to people to remain united against the Left parties.

Earlier in the day, Deb Roy inaugurated a marble bust of Khagendra Debnath at Daochhara Bazar. The memorial meeting was attended by local MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury, BJP Khowai district president Samir Das, mandal president Nitai Bal and other party leaders.
