Congress delegation meet CEO , submit memorandum demanding fair revision of electoral roll

A delegation of senior Congress leaders comprising advocate Prashanat Senchowdhury , spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty and advocate Pritha Deb met in deputation with the chief electoral officer (CEO) Brijesh Pandey. The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum containing a demand for free , fair and transparent special intensive revision of electoral roll (SIR) in Tripura.

In the course of discussion during the deputation the Congress leaders said that following a direction issued by the CEO on May 14 the government employees deputed for electoral roll revision work started house-to-house visits for collection of data aimed at removing names of dead, shifted, duplicate voters and foreign nationals from the roll. This means that the task of special intensive revision has already commenced . They expressed their resentment over the fact that even in a recent all party meeting the election department did not give any clarification on how the SIR work will be gone about. They wondered that even in the all party meeting called in the chamber of the CEO on July 2 no satisfactory reply was given on the methodology to be followed in the matter of SIR. The CEO is reported to have assured the Congress delegation that the task of SIR will be done in accordance with existing law and constitutional provisions and as per directives of the election commission.

However, after the deputation was over the Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said that they are still not convinced that the SIR work will be done fairly and impartially . “We have seen what happened in Bihar and West Bengal and how thousands of genuine Indian citizens and voters have found their names missing from the electoral rolls ; we are not passing any judgment in advance on what may happen in Tripura but we will closely wait and watch as the work progresses “ said Prabir . He added that in case any discrepancy or irregularity comes to notice Congress will launch protest programmes.
