Tree plantation programme held by Sabroom MMD college as part of environment protection

The NSS unit of Michael Madhusudan Dutta (MMD) College, Sabroom in collaboration with the Sabroom Forest Department, organised a tree plantation programme in the college campus today as part of the nationwide environmental protection campaign "Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam". The event was attended by distinguished guests including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Suman Rakshit, Sabroom Forest Beat Officer Sambhu Debbarma along with other forest officials, faculty members and students. The programme was presided over by Dr Anupam Guha, Principal of the college.

The "Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam" initiative was launched on June 5, 2024, on World Environment Day, with the support of the Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This endeavour pays tribute to mothers and emphasizes the importance of tree planting as a means to conserve the environment, aiming also to encourage the younger generation across the country to participate in environmental preservation. By planting trees in the memory of mothers, the initiative seeks to promote greening efforts, reduce the effects of climate change, lower carbon dioxide emission levels, and maintain ecological balance.

The importance of environmental protection through individual participation and the cultivation of habits like caring for trees was repeatedly highlighted by the guests in their speeches. Dr Arup Paturia, the NSS Program Officer, and Dr Tapan Shil, the Secretary of the Teachers' Council, delivered welcoming and concluding remarks respectively. At the end of the event, the guests, students, and participants collectively planted saplings. The students and NSS volunteers were specially urgef to to safeguard the planted saplings through regular care and attention so that they can grow fast and high.
